Cork is the bark of an oak tree known as Quercus Suber. It is an evergreen which grows only in areas bordering the Mediterranean Sea, with Portugal and Spain producing about 80% for the rest of the world to use. It is reported that Cork was used as fishing floats in ancient Egypt as early as 2500 BC.
It has been said, "When Mother Nature made Cork, she over designed it," as the life of the Quercus Suber is about 150 years of production, of a product that offers hundreds of uses, to several generations of people.
The Cork bark is stripped off two-thirds of the tree about every 9 years. This Cork tree is the only tree that can survive such a procedure, due to a thin layer of protective inner bark. The stripping of the Cork bark requires expert skill, as not to damage the inner bark, and is performed with a specially designed hatchet tool. The harvest is then graded, sold and processed into numerous products.
Cork is important because it's unique cellular structure has a specific gravity of only 0.25 allowing; buoyancy, compressibility, resiliency, frictional quality, low thermal conductivity, ability to absorb vibration, stability, and resistance to penetration of liquids.
